Opening date: 27 Nov 2015
Running date: 02 Dec 2015
Artist/Activist/Arsehole is the latest exhibition by Sydney based artist Guy James Whitworth. The (let’s be honest, rather mischievous) title of the exhibition is a reference to the 3 driving forces behind Guy’s work; the instinct to create, the wish to make a difference in the world and the unyielding ego needed to propel that message out into that world.
The exhibition is made up of two parts, “Freedom if you want it” is a series of recent Bike paintings, the subjects of which; various bicycles in urban landscapes, are a metaphor for freedom in it’s many forms. These pieces are intended to challenge the viewer's appreciation of that freedom and also suggest how easily that freedom could be taken away. The second part of the exhibition is “21 Australians” an instillation of portraits celebrating diversity, community and humility where the viewer is encouraged to visually record their own comfort (or even discomfort) within that community.
Guy James Whitworth is a popular visual artist within the LGBTQI community where his colourful and vibrant work is recognised as an accessible visual documentation, breaking down barriers between gender, race, age, sexuality or religion. This is his fifth solo Australian exhibition.
The opening night is Friday the 27th of November 6pm til 8pm
