Jeff Hamilton Solo Exhibition
Opening night - Thursday the 13th of September
6 - 9pm
My practice, embracing stained glass, works on paper, assemblage and sculpture, has continued in this diverse mode ever since my first solo show in 1982. Operating as a full-time commission artist in stained glass, solo exhibitions have been few and far between.
Other than a very small show comprising 5x pieces at Glass Artists' Gallery/Gauge Gallery, Glebe last year my most recent solo was TAP Gallery in 2006. But I have continued an exhibition profile over 3x decades, taking part in art shows such as the Hunters Hill, Blacktown, Singleton, CAS of Victoria, the Sydney and Canberra Royal Shows and numerous Ausglass Conference exhibitions in NSW, Vic and SA.
The work at m2 will primarily comprise recent and not-so-recent pieces that have never been shown, for one reason or another, and some that have had only one or two outings. There will also be two older but recently restored glass works and one completely new stained glass, not yet finished.
Abstract and gestural in nature, the works on paper speak to the rhythms and structure found in contemporary electronic music, particularly the darker, more bass-ey house sounds. Likewise much of my ‘autonomous’ stained glass work. The assemblage and sculptural works are a somewhat different endeavour, looking at relationships between objects, their textural and tonal qualities and the juxtaposition of form. I relish in the found object.
And an underlying theme which can be discerned throughout all the work, whether overt or subtle, is an analysis of personal relationships, of which I have experienced many.
