James Cooper Solo Exhibition
Painting on home shores for the first time in over seven years,‘E R S T W H I L E’ is a collection of new works by Sydney-Born artist James Cooper reflecting a rediscovery of times past in and around the Sydney area.
Spending an extended period seeking inspiration, predominantly on the coastline, new works were inspired by forgotten sights and sounds from childhood, memories of coastal holidays and the push and pull of the east coast swell as it shapes the summer that seems to go on for a million years.
Full moon cycles and the sheer power of the tides found their way into the visceral nature of this new collection. Months and months were spent layering and texturing works all largely created on wooden board.
‘E R S T W H I L E’ explores the idea of a forgotten past just remembered, through the lens of the present moment and opens with a short talk by the artist at M2 Gallery, Surry Hills, September 19, 6-9pm.
