Samuel Leighton-Dore Solo Exhibition
Opening night - Wednesday the 20th of February
6 - 9 pm
Samuel Leighton-Dore is a queer artist and writer based on the Gold Coast. With work spanning ceramics, painting, film and writing, Leighton-Dore is consistently interested in deconstructing and examining themes of sexuality, gender and mental health.
‘Fragile Masculinity, Handle With Care’ is Leighton-Dore's first solo exhibition and sees the artist incorporate contemporary ceramic pieces, acrylic paintings, LED neon, and multimedia works in order to tease popular notions of masculinity. Drawing inspiration from phrenology, a pseudomedicine popular in 19th century, as well as the reverence of stoicism in men through statues, Leighton-Dore presents a cynical portrait of the modern man while maintaining a lightheartedness that is inherently optimistic.
