Come along to the double solo show
PUSH and PULL with the Artwank Podcasters duo Fiona Verity and Julie Nicholson.
Have you listened to Artwank the podcast?
Well now it’s time to see what artists Fiona Verity and Julie Nicholson have learnt and put into practise.
Fiona Verity artist statement :
Never limiting herself to a single medium or material, Fiona’s works on paper, wood and canvas incorporate negative space, found objects and sculptural forms creating works dense with texture and colour to represent her perspective of place and the people in them.
Previously I would have described myself as a landscape painter creating pictures that are made up of multiple moments, by working from life, but during lockdown in 2020 unable to be outside I turned to the domestic scene and adjusted my daily drawing practice, using the window as a way of connecting with the landscape. My pictures include a variety of materials and I flexed between Oil, Acrylic, charcoal and collage - all playing their role.
Drawing is at the root of my practice and whether with charcoal or paint it’s a way of expressing my thoughts, starting a conversation with the viewer of my pictures.
By looking through the window I was able to search for the meaning of place finding solace in drawing what I saw and remembered in these imagined spaces. The window has become a motif, a way of connecting inside and outside. I hope the viewer will question these invented spaces of the inside/interior and outside/landscapes and enjoy the journey with me making pictures of new destinations.
Julie Nicholson Artist statement :
Julie Nicholson is an artist living and working in Avalon Beach on Sydney's Northern Beaches. The artist first came to Australia, 20 years ago from England, and still thinks about ‘home’, and the landscape she grew up with compared to the new landscape of Australia. She uses glazes and mark making, overlapping lines, in paint or pencil, to create abstract interpretations of the world around her.
Nicholson won first prize in painting at the Ewart Art Prize 2021, is a finalist in the Northern Beaches Environmental Art Award 2022 and Semi-finalist in the 2021 KAAF Art Award. She also co-hosts the popular arts podcast, Art W**k.
