Amy Clarke Solo Exhibition
"These works began as paintings and have taken on a life of their own. I have
deliberately kept their rough, torn edges, as they reflect the raw, imperfectly
perfect nature of the remote Australian landscapes I have been privileged to
spend time in.
When I travel, I rarely draw or make studies. I look, and I take photographs. I notice colour, the shapes of landforms, the scrub, wildflowers, trees, and silence. The white trunks of ghost gums against the red earth at Kings Canyon, shells found far from any beach in Western Australia, and lush spinifex set against many shades of brown all settle in my memory until I return to the studio.
Growing up in Western Queensland gave me an enduring bond with the bush, one inseparable from family and memory. I have been fortunate to pass this on to my own children, especially my son. An explorer in the truest sense, he now leads our family on adventures that stretch me further . We don’t glamp. We sleep in swags, a direct encounter that demands hardiness and courage and offers rare chances to meet the landscape in its rawest form. Beneath an open sky, I encounter awe, and sometimes fear . These journeys have become quiet meditations on resilience, and on how profoundly children teach their parents.
This body of work is about connection to land, to lineage, and to the people with
whom I have shared these experiences. Stitching and collaging onto painted
canvas is how I gather the threads of memory and landscape that run through my work. Waxed linen thread has become the perfect device to tie images and ideas together, and so the show’s title is ‘What Binds Us.’
For those familiar with my paintings, this is a new direction."
