STRUCTURES NAVIGATED is an exhibition exploring contemporary urban landscapes and the way the city is experienced, both as a built environment and as a socio-political space. New works by three emerging artists Julien Bowman, Terrence Combos and Meghan Rheynolds have been created in response to their personal experiences of navigating the city and its implicit and explicit parameters.
Julien Bowman is a painter at Sydney College of the Arts. His work contemplates painting and it's expanded field through mediums of painting, video and sculpture, and applied via the stories of post painterly abstraction, minimalism and op art. Julien uses these creative processes as an observer of phenomena, found in optical perception, nature, technology and in materials. He seeks to provide an experience of viewing that allows contemplation on the way we see colour, shape, and materiality.
Terrence Combos is a Sydney-based painter and drawer whose practice engages with the conflation of abstraction and text through the logic of the grid. Using paint markers, felt-tip pens and pencils on board and paper, his work involves the impurification of systematically constrained patterns. The rigid flow of geometric shapes in his work is ruptured and corrupted through the inclusion of negative, flawed, incomplete and indirect communication.
Meghan Rheynolds is a multidisciplinary artist with a focus on sculpture and installation, but also encompasses performing object, photography, video and 2D mixed media. Meghan is inspired by her surrounds and the everyday city environment she lives and participates in. Her interests are found in its politics and navigation. Elements and materials such as light, video, sound, reflection and air are used to illustrate ideas related to politics of space.
Curated by Ebony Secombe, STRUCTURES NAVIGATED sees the multidisciplinary practices of these three artists investigate the everyday motions and movements through time and space, as shaped by the urban experience. By engaging with the city’s systems and infrastructures, they produce works that acknowledge the presence of strategically planned way of life, and the tensions that arise when these systems are subverted and negated.
STRUCTURES NAVIGATED opening night is 17th October, 6-8pm at m2 Gallery, 4/450 Elizabeth St. Surry Hills.
Please join us for the opening event, which will include free drinks and nibblies.
